Not Missing Meat

One of my co-workers is a strict vegetarian, which means I've ended up with the occasional shared vegetarian meal. A lot of the time his food actually tastes better than mine. Just recently I realised that: I don't actually enjoy the taste of meat very much

I mean, I love some Chicken Teriyaki or Curry Beef, but you could switch it with Tofu Teriyaki or Curry Vegetables and I would not notice. The meat adds nothing for me. Sauces and flavours are much more important.

Now during our recent vacation, Emily found us a free all-day buffet deal. The meat offerings at buffets always feel like a brick in your stomach, so I trialled a new diet:

  • Vegetables, fruit, dairy, eggs, etc
  • Seafood, excluding crab, lobster, oyster, etc
  • Coffee and chocolate :)

This has been going quite well and I think I'll stick with this diet for a few weeks at least. The only exception is when Emily can't finish something, because I don't want to waste food. I'm not against eating meat, but it's just wasted if I order any for my meal.

Oh, and the exception to the exception is melons. I hate melons and won't eat them. :)

That's a lie. You can totally taste the difference. I went to a vegetarian restaurant with Jenny and Jason once and the food had a totally different texture to it.

Also, when I was a kid I went to HK. My family took me out to an expensive restaurant for lunch. They asked me why I wasn't eating and I replied, "There's no meat."

Hah. Well, taste and texture are different beasts. I've had tofu that tasted like KFC, but the texture was a tiny bit more consistent/smooth.

Anyway, I just don't think I really appreciate meat. Emily loves a good steak. I like the mushroom sauce.

The exception is fish. I like sushi, fish and chips, fish burgers, etc. Fish has a taste. I just cannot tell many other meats apart. They all have the same bland taste.

Example dinner discussion: "This is the best steak I've ever eaten!" "Peter, that's ostrich."

I'd like to note that P can't tell the difference.. but to someone who likes meat, you can tell. Take for example me - I will always want my meat.... give me a good slice of steak! I would miss life without it I think.

On that note, the buffet had some good BBQ steak. My goodness yum! I wish I could eat more.

Taste and texture are different things, true. However, they both come together to produce one sensation. I don't think you can really define the sensation when you're missing one of them.
